SANDAKAN: An ambulance collided with a Perodua Viva vehicle at Batu 10, Jalan Labuk here, today leading to the death of its passenger.

Sandakan Police District Chief, ACP Zabidi Md Zain, said the victim, identified as Awang Ali Amat, 65, was confirmed dead at about 2.30pm while receiving treatment at the emergency room for his head injury.

Initial report stated that the accident happened at about 10.45am when the ambulance and Perodua Viva changed direction at the same time, causing the ambulance driver to lose control of his vehicle and crashed on a slope before it overturned.

The ambulance was on its way from Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu to send the victim who was diagnosed with heart disease. Also injured in the accident was a female doctor, while the ambulance driver and two other passengers are in stable condition.

A rescue team consisting of police, JBMP personnel, Public Defense personnel, and hospital employees were rushed to the scene. The case will be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transportation Act 1987. – SayangSabah
