KOTA KINABALU – There is overcrowding at Cure and Care Rehabilitation Centre Papar (CCRC Papar).
The director Tugiman Kayun, said the centres capacity should be 290 inmates at any one time but there are 330 drug addicts being treated there presently.
He said they spend RM 8 per day on supplying medicine for each drug abuser.
Most were arrested and sentenced by the courts and ordered to undergo treatment for drug addiction for two years in CCRC.
He emphasised that 30 drug addicts had involuntarily checked in for treatment.
“Six women and twenty four men who involuntarily checked in for treatment are now being treated free of charge. We have spent RM450 on each of them during their first day in the hostel. The expenses went towards new clothes, shoes and their other necessity,” he added.
“Our government has spent three hundred million in a year on treating drug addicts in country,” he said.
Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid shared that the number of drug addicts in Sabah has increased since last year.
“In 2012, the numbers of drug addicts were only 770 and dropped to 658 in 2013. However, number escalated to 1036 last year. This has shown that there were 57% increase in 2014,” she said.
“In 2014, 1036 drug addicts were identified and 87.8% from them were teenagers and youth under the age of 39,” she said.
“Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) statistic on drug cases also increased in 2014. In 2013, there were 10342 cases, however, it raised up to 11985 in 2014 which is 15.89% increase,” she said on the National Anti-drug Day Celebration 2015 programme that was held in Taman Jaya Diri, Sepanggar, today.-By Saila Saidie/Sayangsabah
