DUNGUN: An outing by four Form Five students to find cockles at Pantai Sura here today turned into a tragedy when one of them was
swept away by strong waves and drowned.

Mohd Firdaus Sulong, 17, from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sura, got into difficulties and his body was later washed ashore at around 3pm.

He and his friends Mohd Zukhairie Mohd Yusof, Mohd Haris Ikhwan Rosmadi and Ahmad Sufian Husin had taken advantage of the long Chinese New Year break to go the beach to find cockles and had arrived there at about 10am.

Dungun police chief Supt Ahmad Zailani Yaacob said the victim’s body was sent to the Dungun Hospital for a post-mortem.

He advised the people to stay away from the beach due to the rough waves there now.

The beach has been a hive of activity because of a “cockle bonanza” there as the mussels get swept inshore by the strong waves.- BERNAMA
