SANDAKAN:  The Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) today launched an operation code-named ‘Ops Gasak’ to hunt down the remaining
illegal immigrants in the squatter village of Mangkalinau, on the outskirt of Sandakan town.

As said by ESSCom commander DCP Datuk Abd Rashid Harun, the operation is part of the continuous effort by ESSCom to clean the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone), including Sandakan, of illegal immigrants.

The operation, involving 300 security personnel, is conducted simultaneously with an operation by the Energy Commission against illegal wiring connection.

Also involved in the operation were the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), Sandakan Municipal Council, the police, the Immigration Department, Water Supply Department and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

ESSCom was established on April 1, 2013, following the intrusion by Sulu militants in Tanduo, Lahad Datu. ESSZone covers 10 districts, namely Kudat, Kota Marudu, Pitas, Beluran, Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Semporna and Tawau.- BERNAMA
