SANDAKAN: A total of 915 people were checked under Ops Gasak in areas under the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) over three days starting on Aug 6.

ESSCom Special Investigation/Technical Team director SAC Rosli Mohd Isa said from the total, 323 people were taken to the Sandakan Temporary Detention Centre for further screening and inspection.

He said after the screening, 124 who were suspected to be illegal immigrants, were handed over to Immigration Department to be repatriated to their country of origin.

Rosli said all of them were nabbed at three squatter villages near the Sandakan Municipality Council flats in Jalan Batu Sapi, Kampung Mangkalinau and Kampung Melayu Batu 8.

“They were detained for not possessing valid personal identification documents. The operation is an ongoing effort of ESSCom to clean up the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) of illegal immigrants,” he said after inspecting Ops Gasak in Kampung Melayu Batu 8 near here today.

He said the operation to track down illegal immigrants ended today without any disruption.

Rosli said Ops Gasak was conducted simultaneously with the operation to eradicate illegal electric wire extension by the Energy Commission and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB).

He hoped similar operations would be extended to other districts under ESSZone to curb such dangerous illegal activities.- BERNAMA
