KOTA KINABALU: Ocean King Restaurant manager, Thien Nyuk Fun, who was held captive for nearly six months by Abu Sayyaf groups has been released.
Reportedly disoriented but in good health, the 50yearold woman arrived safely in the arms of her beloved family at her hometown in Sandakan early Monday morning.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman confirmed the release of Thien.
“She was released by her captive around 10pm on Sunday, November 8. She is in good health although she had to endure a long journey, about sixhours by road and sea from Jolo Island, Thien is finally being reunited with her love ones,” he said yesterday.
The released of Thien was believed due to amicable settlement between the Malaysian authority and the Abu Sayyaf groups.
Malaysia is currently working around the clock for the release of Sarawakian, Bernard Ghen Ted Fen, 39, who was kidnapped together with Thien on May 14 at the Ocean King Restaurant in Sandakan.
It is understood that both Thien and Ghen were supposed to be released together but according to sources, there were complication for the latter’s released due to other Abu Sayyaf groups’ involvement in the negotiations.-Albert Goh/Sayangsabah
