KOTA KINABALU: Parents who have intellectually disabled children are encouraged to join the Special Olympics which provide year-round training programmes.
The athlete potential of the child could be unearth through the sports programmes where they could be groomed to take part in sports competition and even at the World Summer Games, said Special Olympics Sabah (SOS) chairman Datuk Safari Manan.
He recalled in the past, many parents who have special need children are reluctant to let their children go out and hide them in the house for fear of being shamed by the public.
Safari also hopes the intellectually disabled will be given more recognition such as more opportunities in getting training and securing a job in future.
“Now it is very difficult because we have to go out and convince everybody, even though the policy of the government is already there. Now we need to see the better implementation of the government policy from all sectors,” called Safari.-Sayangsabah
