TAWAU: Electricity tariff will not be increased this year.
Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Maximus Ongkili said electricity tariff in the country including Sabah and Sarawak will not increase this year.
He said, this was assured by the statement by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak when announcing the restructuring of Budget 2015 recently.
“The Federal government has decided that there will be no increase in price this year,” he reiterated during his visit to Pasar Tanjong, Tawau, today.
According to him, it was supposed to have increased in 2014 but it was decided that the Government would bear the cost with savings earned from independent power producers amounting RM800 million.
“We might have to depend on the oil price next year but we hope it will be stable and not too high or too low because it will affect the country’s economy,” he said.
Regarding the high prices of goods, Maximus said that cooperation of all parties especially the producers, suppliers, traders, and consumers is needed to help reduce the price of goods, to be consistent with the falling price of oil.
“The government can only take actions against those who break the law, while everyone know that when the oil prices fall it will also decrease the cost of production,” he said. – Sayangsabah
