KUALA LUMPUR:  Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak paid tribute to Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s founding prime minister who died
today, hailing the late leader’s determination in developing the republic from a new nation to a modern and dynamic city.

In a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office, Najib said he was saddened to hear the news of Kuan Yew’s demise.

Kuan Yew, the father of Singapore Prime Minister Hsien Loong, died at 3.18 am today at the Singapore General Hospital where he had been admitted on Feb 5 for severe pneumonia. He was 91.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and family. I pay tribute to Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s determination in developing Singapore from a new nation to the modern and dynamic city we see today,” he said.

Najib said Malaysia was committed to the future of its relationship with Singapore.

He said Malaysia was also committed to peace, stability and shared prosperity between the two nations and within Asean as a whole.

In a Facebook post earlier, Najib conveyed his condolences to Hsien Loong and described Kuan Yew’s achievements as great and his legacy, assured.

Prime Minister Hsien Loong has declared a period of national mourning in Singapore from today to March 29, during which the national flag will be flown at half-mast. -BERNAMA
