PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Singapore today inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) here to enhance cooperation in the field of information and communications.
Malaysia’s Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak and the Minister for Communications and Information of Singapore, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim signed the MoU on behalf of their respective countries.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Communication and Multimedia (KKMM) released in conjunction with the event, the signing of the MoU signalled a commitment by the two countries to work together on the information and communication sectors, mainly in broadcasting.
It said the MoU also aimed to enhance cooperation in the field of information technology, especially the use of computers and internet as a means of communication and dissemination of information.
“Both countries agreed to conduct exchanges of radio and television programs, mass media representatives as well as information on policy and regulatory matters for the benefit of both countries,” it said.
“The collaboration in the area of postal services and the promotion of industry collaboration between Malaysia and Singapore will also be further strengthened,” it added.
Meanwhile, Salleh said the MoU between Malaysia and Singapore on information and communications was an historical event for both countries.
“We will work together in these two areas,” he told reporters after the signing ceremony, here today.
Meanwhile, Yaacob said Singapore welcomed the collaboration with Malaysia in information and communication cooperation.
“We think it is an important MoU because the field of information and communication is evolving very quickly,” he said.
The signing is in conjunction with the 10th Muzika Ekstravaganza Concert which will be held at Auditorium Perdana, Angkasapuri in Kuala Lumpur today.
The musical programme, featuring Malaysian and Singaporean performers, will be broadcast live in the two countries.
The MoU signing ceremony was witnessed by Communications and Multimedia Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Sharifah Zarah Syed Ahmad and the Permanent Secretary of Communications and Information Ministry of Singapore, Aubeck Kam. – BERNAMA
