ALOR SETAR:  A couple on a motorcycle was killed when they were hit by a car while making a U-turn at Kampung Padang Perahu, Jitra, this morning.

Zaiton Hassan, 60, died at the scene while her husband Zainol Shafie, 62, was pronounced dead at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah at around 3.30pm.

Kubang Pasu district police chief Supt Abdul Rahim Abdul said in the 11.05 am incident, the victims on a Demak motorcycle made a sudden switch to the right lane to make a U-turn without realising the presence of other vehicles.

“A Proton Waja car heading in the same direction towards Kodiang tried to avoid the collision, but failed, as it was too near to the motorcycle” he told Bernama today.

He said the motorcycle was thrown onto the opposite lane due to the impact of the collision.

Abdul Rahim urged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Inspector Aziz Mustafa at 04-9172222.

Meamwhile, in BALING, a final year Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) student was killed in an accident at KM48.1 Jalan Baling-Sungai Petani near Kampung Charok Bemban at 11am today.

Baling police chief Supt Sharifuddin Yusof said Siti Natrah Mat Hussin, 23, died at the scene after the motorcycle she was riding was hit by a Perodua Kancil car.

He said the driver of the car lost control while negotiating a bend there and crashed in to the victim’s motorcycle.

The victim’s mother, Rokiah Saad, 60, said her daughter, who took up maritime studies, was a very bubbly person.

“Only yesterday she had joked that she would only be coming home this Chinese New Year holidays and not so soon,” she said, adding that the family accepted what had happened as fated.- BERNAMA
