SEMPORNA: The Semporna Marine Operations Force (MOF) foiled an attempt to smuggle out 50 cooking gas cyclinders to a neighboring country, early yesterday.
Sabah Region MOF commander ACP Mohamad Madun said a team conducting a special assignment at about 8.40 am spotted a boat moving in a suspicious manner in waters off Pulau Samar-Samar.
“Upon inspecting the boat, my personnel found 50 green gas cyclinders in the boat,” he said in a statement here today.
He said the skipper of the boat, who was a local man aged 34, failed to present a permit to carry the gas cylinder.
“The gas cyclinders, boat and boat engines worth RM14,000 were seized, and the skipper can be prosecuted under the Control of Supplies Act 1961,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mohamad said MOF personnel also arrested a 62-year-old man for trying to enter the country without valid documents.
“As members of MOF were carrying out special duties near Pulau Batik, Kulambu, at 10 pm last night, they approached a boat and three men were seen jumping into the sea to escape arrest by the security forces,” he said.
He said the elderly man admitted he was from Sitangkai, Philippines, and lived in the Kunak district.
“The elderly man has been detained according to the Immigration Act,” he said. -BERNAMA
