KOTA KINABALU; The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Kudat seized four locally registered fishing boats and about 500 kg of various fish species in an operation off Kudat and Pitas, yesterday.
Kudat Maritime Operations officer, Maritime Lieutenant Commander Boon Chin Chau said the four skippers of the boat and 12 crew, among them Indonesians and Filipinos with valid documents, aged between 16 and 45, were also detained.
“They were intercepted around 9.30 pm and found to be using banned trawl nets to fish under cover of darkness. An inspection with the aid of a sea surveillance system also found that they had been fishing in an area less than three nautical miles from the shore. This is a violation of the conditions in the fishing licence,” he said in a statement today.
Meanwhile, the MMEA in TAWAU on Friday seized about 30 tonnes of oil palm fruits worth RM12,000 believed to have been smuggled in from Indonesia, to be sold locally.
Tawau Maritime enforcement chief, Capt Anor Jaafar said the agricultural produce were found in a boat which was intercepted at 3.20 pm.
“The skipper who is a local in his 30s has been detained for failing to show a permit to carry the fruits,” he said in a statement today.- BERNAMA
