KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Special Tasks Datuk Teo Chee Kang has urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to collaborate with Huawei to improve the internet connectivity in Sabah.

Teo said digital economy is crucial to the nation’s economy growth and ecommerce is an inevitable global trend as shown on November 11, 2015 during the Singles’ Day Shopping Festival in China, the Alibaba Group’s recorded a transaction of USD14.32 billion for its online sales.

“It was reported 68 per cent of the orders was done through mobile devices,” he said that after attending the opening ceremony of Huawei’s Customer Solution Innovation and Integration Experience Centre by Communication and Multimedia Minister Senator Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Mohd Salleh Said Keruak at Cyberjaya on Monday.

Teo said the advancement of information communication technology (ICT) has changed our way of life as nowadays we convey our messages via WhatsApp or Wechat, making the short messaging service (SMS) redundant nowadays.

“In future we can even shop for fruit and groceries via internet as the world is intricately connected to boost economic growth. I urge MCMC, in collaboration with Huawei, to improve the internet connectivity in Sabah as we need to build ‘digital road’ if we want development,” stated Teo.-Sayangsabah
