KUNDASANG: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Humanitarian Fund has collected more than RM777,000 for earthquake victims in Sabah.
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Halim Shafie said he expected the Sabah Earthquake Fund to raise at least RM1 million in public donations made via the short messaging service (SMS).
“This is because we collected more than RM2 million for the flood victims in the east coast states,” he told reporters after presenting walkie-talkies to the Mountain Guide Association and the Sabah Parks Board of Trustees here, today.
Halim said the money raised to help the Sabah earthquake victims would be handed over to the state government for distribution.
Members of the public who want to donate can do so by typing GEMPA followed by the amount and sending it to 13999. The MCMC also presented RM5,000 to the family of the late Ricky Masinin, one
of the mountain guides who died during the earthquake on June 5.
Halim said the late Masinin was involved in the Mount Kinabalu Post Box project developed by MCMC in collaboration with Pos Malaysia in February. The post box placed at 3,289 metres at Pendant Hut, Laban Rata is the highest in the country and listed in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR). – BERNAMA
