KOTA KINABALU: A local man was fined RM17,000 in default 17 months jail in default by the Sessions Court, yesterday, for possessing fake passport and two passports belonged to other individuals.
For the first charge, Osman Aman, 48, admitted guilty before the High Court Senior Vice Registrar, Mohd Hafizi Abdul Halim, for keeping seven passports with fake social visit pass.
He was found committing the offense in 24 June last year, around 3.00pm at Taman Bukit Keramat, Likas.
He was charged under Section 56 (1)(i) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 which carries the punishment of RM10,000 fine maximum or jail up to five years.
For the second charge, he confessed for committing the offense of keeping four passports belonged to other individuals, at the same place, time, and day.
Osman faces charges under Section 12 (1)(f) of the Passport Act 1966 and punishable under Section 12 (1) of the same act, which carries the punishment of up to RM10,000 fine, five years jail maximum, or both.
In mitigation, his lawyer, Rakhbir Singh applied for a minimum fine. However, the prosecutor insisted that a fair punishment should be given to the accused.
