KOTA KINABALU: The Federation of Sabah Industries (FSI) has called on the federal government to exempt Port Klang and Sepanggar Bay Container Port from the cabotage policy.
FSI honorary life president Datuk Seri Panglima Wong Khen Thau made the call as the current partial lifting of the cabotage policy was not effective because foreign vessels are only allowed to pick-up goods from overseas that had been stationed in Port Klang.
“For example, the foreign vessels can only pick-up goods from China, Japan, Korea, Europe and so on to Sabah but not those from peninsula. If the containers originating from peninsula or overseas has been opened and repacked, it cannot be transported to Sabah.
“So the foreign vessels can only carry goods that are fully containerized, once opened it had to be carry by local ships, so this is partial liberalisation and nobody want to do that,” explained Wong during a press conference at the Sabah International Dairies Sdn Bhd office in Kolombong on Wednesday.- Sayangsabah
