KOTA KINABALU: The state Ministry of Local Government and Housing through Local Authority (PBT) has proper authority under the Ordinance of Local Government 1961 for unoccupied buildings and abandoned real estate properties.
Its Deputy Minister, Datuk Joachim Gunsalam, said under the jurisdiction of Section 49A, 49B, 49C, and 49D, PBT will have to take action in halting and eliminating any kinds of public nuisance from areas under PBT.
“Legal action will also be taken against individuals who cause disturbances, as well as to demand compensation,” he said at the 14th State Legislative Assembly, today.
He as responding to the question raised by Charles Pang (Karamunting-BN) who enquires on the availability of laws and regulation which gives the ministry the authority for unoccupied buildings and abandoned properties, and the actions taken to handle the issues.
According to him, the move taken by PBT depends on the problems which might arise when dealing with abandoned buildings and properties.
“In Sandakan, one such cases involves a the neglected Sea View Garden housing project at Jalan Buli Sim-Sim, which have eight five-storey apartment blocks with 80 housing units,” he said.
He added that Sandakan City Hall (MPS) has organized a meeting with banks and interested developers in August 2003, and with National Housing Company Limited (SPNB) representative in February 2004 in the hope of continuing the project.
There were no positive results from the meeting, however, and MPS has launched an operation to clear the abandoned buildings from illegal tenants, he said. - SayangSabah
