KANGAR:  Road Transport Department (JPJ) has denied a statement reported in the media on Thursday (Feb 18) relating to a RM2,000 fine to be imposed on those tinting the windows of their cars beyond the legal limit.

Its director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said the maximum fine imposed by RTD for the offence in question was RM300.

He said JPJ received negative feedback from people who were not satisfied with the high amount of the fine, claiming that the department was out to make a profit.

“I want to stress that there have been confusion on this matter which was reported by the media (The Sun), quoting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

“The fine of up to RM2,000 or six months in jail as reported, is for the owner of a car or driver who is convicted in the court for not complying with the traffic rule for the first time,” he said during a ‘Jom JPJ’ programme held at the Giant supermarket here.

Ismail said that JPJ tolerated a variance of up to 10 per cent for offences related to the tinting of car windows and speeding before issuing any compounds, and urged those who had any queries regarding the enforcement of the rules by
the department to approach any JPJ counter near them.- BERNAMA
