TAWAU: More than 20 squatters settlements in the district are identified having illegal electricity connection which causes Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) to lose millions in revenues.
SESB Public Communication Officer, Darrel Lorimer Peter Ng, said those who use illegal electricity connection can be punished for consuming electricity illegaly according to Electricity Act 1990, with a punishment of fine up to RM100,000 or a maximum three years imprisonment, or both, if found guilty.
“Illegal electricity connection can cause power disruption for the surrounding communities. In this regard, SESB will continue to tackle any illegal electricity connection in squatters settlement in the district,” he said in his statement, here today.
Previously, SESB personnels have done several operations to eradicate this problem where they seized various types of electric cables weighing 50-100 kilogrammes in each operation, he added.
The cables were used by irresponsible individuals for illegal electricity connection to the main line, disregarding public safety.
He also said that in one of the operation with the collaboration of Energy Commission (ST) at Batu 4, Tawau, where about 50 squatters settlements were inspected for illegal electiricty connection. – SayangSabah
