KENINGAU: About 16 fraud cases for online shopping involving college students, government employees and housewives in the district have been reported from July 2014 until this year.
District Police Chief, Deputy Superintendent Douglas Nyeging Taong, said these cases recorded approximately RM33,000 worth of losses with the latest case reported in 19 July by a 24-year-old housewife.
“The victim lost RM6,900 when she was cheated by an offer to buy a mobile phone via Facebook where she then deposited a sum of money into the suspect’s account. After two weeks, the suspect was unable to be reached,” he said in a press conference yesterday.
He said the case is investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for illicit online business.
Douglas also advises the public to be more cautious with items sold in social media. – SayangSabah
