KOTA KINABALU – Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan said his expectation is high for Sabah football team.
“The expectation is very high especially from the fans. We are spending a large considerable some of money to engage these foreign players.
“So we really hope that they will deliver or else it will be another disappointment,” he said to reporters after delivering the Chief Minister of Sabah Datuk Seri Musa Aman’s speech at the 2014 Sabah Football Association (SAFA) Annual Congress in Le Meridien Hotel, Kota Kinabalu, here today.
Tawfiq who is also the SAFA Vice President said that the Sabah football players must show their ability and carry themselves with dignity as Sabah players in the coming Premier League season.
The team was demoted to the Premier League level after finishing at the bottom of the heap in their Super League in 2012.
However, Tawfiq believed that team can bring back respect to Sabah in the football scene.
“It is very important for the team to work together as a unit. The Chief Minister has instructed everyone including those from the grassroots leadership of SAFA to do their part especially unearth new talents,” he said.
He explained that there is a need in focusing on grassroots youth development because engaging the foreign players is just a short term measure.
“We need to unearth new talent and focus on our young player development,” he said.
The team is expected to announce their lineup on this coming 17th January. – By Fizah Yusof/SayangSabah
