KOTA KINABALU: The six per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) will not be imposed on consumers in the residential category who used below 300 kWh per month of electricity, said Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB).
SESB general manager finance Lisa Wan explained that 300 kWh is equivalent to about RM90 per month in the electricity bill.
“Anything above that (300 kWh) and above RM100 is GST chargeable. So those with low consumption will be saved from paying GST. The exemption is only applicable for residential housing and the usage must not exceed 300 kWh per month through a tariff reduction rate of RM0.012 which took effect from March until June this year.”
“After that period, the government will review the tariff again,” Lisa told reporters after a luncheon between SESB and the media at a hotel yesterday.
There are some government departments being exempted from paying the GST but they must apply and get approval from the Customs Department, she said.-Sayangsabah
