KUALA LUMPUR: An UMNO delegate today called on the government to give 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) to city dwellers earning below RM5,000 a month.
Federal Territory UMNO Information chief Datuk Mustapa Kamal Mohd Yusof when debating the president’s speech at the UMNO General Assembly 2015, said the household income of RM5,000 in big cities such as Kuala Lumpur, could be just scraping by.
“There are 116,726 low-cost housing in the Federal Territory, the number of voters are about 600,000 and 33 per cent of them are living in low-cost houses, some of them have to go fishing at the ponds because they can’t afford to buy fish at the market,” said the Seputeh UMNO chief.
Mustapa Kamal also urged the government to help people in the Federal Territory to own comfortable homes so that they could build a better life.
“About 70 per cent of Malay applicants who want to buy affordable houses are not qualified (to apply), and 30 per cent of the affordable housing could not be bought because the deposit is quite high,” he said.- BERNAMA
