Gearing up to welcome CNY


KUALA LUMPUR: With the Chinese New Year around the corner, several shopping malls have launched various programmes to usher in the
Fire Monkey Year.

Quill City Mall, at Jalan Sultan Ismail is having two gigantic Terracota Army generals measuring 9.14 metres (30 feet) accompanied by 60 warriors, each measuring 0.61 meters (2 feet), to greet its customers at its main entrance.

With the theme “Mighty Terracotta”, the warriors represent strength, energy and victory, and “this is the wish for all, that 2016 would be a year of great strength and success”, stated the mall in a statement here today.

The shopping mall also hopes that its 9.14-metre Terracota sculptures will be endorsed as the Biggest Styrofoam Terracota Army replica by the Malaysia Book of Records.

It said besides the Terracota Army, the shoppping mall is also putting up ancient Chinese village theme stalls filled with Chinese New Year offerings.

While on Jan 20, the mall will be hosting 89 senior citizens from Rumah Victory, Ti-Ratana Welfare Society, Rumah Sejahtera Seri Setia and Rumah Charis. In Bukti Bintang, Sungei Wang Plaza has launched ‘Hundred of Lions, Centuries of Prosperity’ Carnival to usher the auspicious Chinese New Year. The initiative started last Saturday and ends on Feb 14.

“The celebration is filled with cultural performances including Lion Dance, Mask Changing Performances, CNY Mini Kids Dance and Art and craft workshops from 10am to 10pm,” said Knight Frank Malaysia Sdn Bhd Property Management Commercial Executive Director, Natalie Leong.

She said it hoped to convey good fortune and good luck to all of the shop owners, tenants and shoppers.

“In Chinese beliefs, lions are able to extrude bad spirit, bring good luck and good omen. The CNY Carnival is part of our annual programme not to be missed,” she said at the opening ceremony today.

The mall will also hold a charity bazaar on Jan 16 starting from 11am to 9pm selling hand-made products by senior citizens, food and beverages, handicraft and many more, she said.

In Subang Jaya, The Summit has chosen the traditional Chinese sky lantern known as Kong-Ming lantern as the theme to signify the blessing for the brighter year.

The Summit has also lined up various activities such as lion dance performance, calligraphy competition, a five element drum performance, kids
singing competition as well as an album promotional session by a few local artistes.

Today the shopping complex held a special ceremony to celebrate with the less fortunate from Sungai Way Old Folks Home, Beautiful Gate Disable Centre and Shechem Home, in conjunction with the Chinese New Year.

Some 60 old folks and children with disabilities recieved hampers and angpow presented by the Chairman of the Summit Subang USJ Management Corporation, Zuhairy Md Isa.- BERNAMA
