KOTA KINABALU: The Federation of Sabah Industries (FSI) did not create a myth or demonised the cabotage policy.
Its honorary life president Datuk Seri Panglima Wong Khen Thau said FSI merely voicing the industry grievances so that they can get help and contribute to the state’s socio economic development.
“There are more foreign vessels calling directly on Sabah ports compared to post- cabotage policy era. It is only people who are ignorant of this fact would claim this to be a myth,” said Wong during a press conference at the Sabah International Dairies Sdn Bhd office in Kolombong on Wednesday.
The cabotage policy had restricted the East Malaysian exporters’ choice when they had to transit in Port Klang which created a longer route and raises their exporting costs, said Wong in rebutting a statement by a certain local exporter Richard Wong Tzu Piaw in a local newspapers recently.
The claimant said that the sea freight charges from Port Klang to Sabah (RM800 per TEU) and vice versa is the cheapest are inaccurate when he used Hong Kong and Singapore as a comparison because it is only cheap for exporting high-value products such as live sea products, he said.- Sayangsabah
