SEMPORNA: Communities of various ethnicities in the country need to put aside their differences in order to live in peace and harmony.
Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, said that it can be achieved by respecting each other in all situations.
“We have to accept and respect others before we are to be respected. With such virtue, unity and solidarity will be self-evident; focus on common ground, not differences,” he said in his speech for the Chinese New Year Celebration 2015 organized by Semporna Tionghua Chamber of Commerce, here yesterday.
Shafie added, in a multicultural communities it is important to respect the religions, cultures, and ethnicity of others and to appreciate their contributions in the nation’s development.
“Tolerance between the people in this country must be improved in today’s challenging global situation, in consequence of problems of other countries which devastate lives when there are no unity and solidarity.
“There is no benefit for the country when its society is in disarray and divided,” he said.
He also added that the government will never neglect any communities and equal treatment are given to everyone.
Shafie also want the public to avoid extremism and not influenced by extremists who want to see divisions in the country. – SayangSabah
