KUALA LUMPUR: The flood situation in Sarawak continued to worsen as 2,679 people were evacuated to 19 flood relief centres in Kuching and Bau as at 5pm today but the situation in Melaka and Johor continued to show a marked improvement.

The 2,679 total number of flood evacuees registered in Kuching and Bau was more than a 100 percent increase from the morning figure of 1,065 and a slight increase from the head count at noon which was 2,501.

Sarawak Civil Service Department (JPAM) public relations officer Siti Huzaimah Ibrahim told Bernama in a statement that 14 relief centres were opened in Kuching and five in Bau to house the victims from 694 families.

A visit to Kampung Batu Kitang by Bernama, one of the areas affected by floods, showed fire and rescue department personnel deployed to the area, especially near the river to monitor the water level.

In MELAKA, the flood situation continued to improve as only 119 flood victims remained at Sekolah Kebangsaan Belimbing Dalam, Durian Tunggal, Alor Gajah as at 3pm today.

Melaka Civil Defence Department director Lt Kol (PA) Effendy Ali said the relief centre at Balai Raya Bukit Balai, Durian Tunggal, Alor Gajah where 26 people were staying was closed at 12 noon.

“If the flood situation continues to improve, those housed at the only relief centre remaining in the state would be allowed to return home,” he told Bernama, here today.

In JOHOR, three more flood relief centres in Tangkak and Segamat were closed as flood waters receded.

According to the state Disaster Management Committee, the Kampung Awat relief centre in Segamat was closed at 5pm while in Tangkak, the centres at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sialang and Sekolah Agama Bandar Tangkak were closed at 4.30pm.

“The only remaining centre at SK Spang Loi in Segamat has 10 flood victims from two families,” he said adding that agencies involved would continue to monitor the situation. -BERNAMA
