ALOR SETAR: A woman drowned and a man was arrested after their car ran into a canal as they were fleeing from pursuing police in Jitra
yesterday, police said.
The incident happened at 3.15am in Jalan Kampung Pida 6, Ayer Hitam, said Kubang Pasu District Police chief Supt Abdul Rahim Abdul.
He said the 37-year-old woman, who was driving the car, and the 46-year-old man, who was in the front passenger seat, fled towards Kerpan town in Jitra with the police on their heels.
At Tandop C here, the car skidded and plunged into an irrigation canal, he said, adding that the woman and the man emerged from the vehicle.
The man swam to a bank of the canal and was arrested by the police but the woman drowned, he said in a statement.
Abdul Rahim said the woman’s body was recovered by personnel from the Jitra Fire and Rescue Station at 10.30am and sent to Jitra Hospital.
