TAMBUNAN: Sabah Idol title went to 18-year-old Nur Shafinas in Tambunan after the final competition at Romandawi Café here recently.
Popularly known as Fey-fey, this girl lived her dream as Tambunan’s Sabah Idol title last weekend when she wowed the audience with her powerful rendition of Celine Dion “It’s All Coming Back To Me”.
The Keningau lass captivating performance was backed by beatboxers Jordan and David, Bboy Azim and a delightful back-up dancers Noah and Memey, adding glitz to her versatility.
Second placing went to another crowd favourite Christopher Adrian Wences also an ex-Sugandoi champion. His strong melodious voice singing an Anuar Zain’s number guaranteed him the 1st Runner-up slot while 3rd place went to 12 year old singing sensation Darrel Bravo John. Singing the Platters’ classic number “Only You” this little dynamo showed his prowess by hitting the high notes with his amazing falsetto and his very entertaining showmanship which literally had the crowd eating from his hand.
Best Costume award went to Laidiah Sophian Joeseh an ex-full band while Best Showmanship was won by Mohd Noorsaifullah who brought tears to the judges’ eyes with his heart-rending performance of a jilted lover.
Most Popular went to 9 year old Delbert Connan John the youngest contestant so far in the history of Sabah Idol. Pint size but brimming with confidence he gave his much older fellow competitors a run for their money with his crowd pleasing ‘rock star’ performance prompting Guest of Honour Datuk Jeffrey Kitingan to shake his head with awe and disbelieve.
“Such confidence and talent for a 9 year old. Amazing” He said. In a never before seen decision, the judges headed by Peter Dicky Lee and Azam Yakob of Malaysian Idol, Boy Terrence of Raja Lawak and 2006 Sugandoi champ, Arnold Wences unanimously endorse the inclusion of two wildcards “The Jury’s Choice” Emilia Kenit and Maxell Walter Cyril for their admirable consistency from the audition onwards up to the final.
Singer/Organizer Peter Dicky Lee said “I am overwhelmed by the high standard shown by most of the contestants in Tambunan. Their talents are of such high standard that they are comparable to the Akademi Fantasia level. We the jury have no hasitation at all in choosing not 3 but 8 singers to compete in the grand finale to be held after Chinese New Year. I’m grateful to YB Datuk Jeffrey for sponsoring this event without which there will be no Tambunan Sabah Idol and also to Dickson Jailis of Creative Sound & Light.”- By Bosco Wong/Sayangsabah
