KOTA KINABALU: The federal government is committed in supporting the Heart of Borneo initiative (HOB) to ensure the rainforest in Borneo Island remains intact.
Minister of Natural Resource and Environment, Dato’ Sri Dr. Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, said the federal government realizes the significance of HOB where its objective is in line with the policies and programmes related to sustainable development, land uses and preservation effort in the state and national level.
“ Some 1.56 million hectares of land in the state has been gazetted as a protection area where there is an apparent increase when HOB was first introduced in 2007. This is an achievement for biodiversity conservation in all HOB areas,” he said during the closing ceremony for the International HOB conference that was held for two days at Magellan Sutera.
Junaidi also said ideas from the conference are expected to help Malaysia to come up with a working plan to carry out its initiative which was signed in 2007.
The government, he said, has also plan to create a new policy related with the National Water Policy as part of its initiative to maintain clean water resources for public use in the country.
“While the level of rainwater in the country is high, only 20 percent has been used effectively for the community.
‘This policy is also to help the country in solving clean water shortages,” he added.
However, the policy is still being studied and under government’s observation. –SayangSabah
