TAWAU: A viral rumour in WhatsApp social media about the arrest of eight civil servants in the district for spreading edited pictures of the nation’s leader has been confirmed as fake.
District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Awang Besar Dullah, said the alleged rumour is untrue and there has not been any arrest carried out by his department as claimed by the misleading news that went viral in social application.
The rumour claims that all mobile phone numbers were scanned automatically by the Malaysia Communication and Multimedia Commision (SKMM) to monitor any status about the country’s leaders which might have been edited.
The alleged monitoring will then charge any suspected individuals under the Printing Presses and Publication Act, with the recent cases involving two police personnels from Tawau District Police Headquarters, four teachers from the district and Lahad Datu, and another two hospital employees arrested. – SayangSabah
