TAWAU: State Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Pang Yuk Ming, calls for Bumiputera parents and guardians in rural areas not to deter their children from speaking English at home.
He said they should not punish them under the assumption of their children being rude by speaking a language the older generation is not acquainted with.
“Children’ interests in English language will disappear if they are scolded or ridiculed because they are still learning. We need to encourage them (to speak English) and should not feel uncomfortable,” he said after visiting several primary schools in Merotai.
He gave the advise after observing the results of Bumiputera students in the recent UPSR examination for English in his constituency, which he described needs to be improved with the help of all related parties. –SayangSabah
