JAKARTA: An earthquake, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, struck Mamberamo Raya in the province of Papua, Indonesia, today.
According to the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) website, the quake struck at 4.41 am (East Indonesian time).
It occurred at a depth of 49km below sea level and 75km southeast of Mamberamo Raya. However, there was no risk of a tsunami.
So far, the authorities had yet to determine the extent of the damage to properties and loss of lives, if any.
Mamberamo Jaya is in the interior area of Papua with a population of about 23,000 residents.-BERNAMA
