KOTA KINABALU: Lion dance troupes that have yet to receive lions head from the Sabah State Government will acquire one soon.
The government will continue to contribute lion heads for non-governmental lion dance troupes this year, Peter Chong Su Leong, Political Secretary to the Minister of Special Tasks said.
According to him, priority will be given to dance troupes that have not received lion heads from the State Government in the past.
He said the State Government have revised the state budget and stepped up prudent measures in its expenditures due to the fall in oil prices this year.
“However, the State Government will continue to support lion dance activities, although there will be a slight decrease in the number of lion heads given away to lion dance troupes this year,” Chong said.
In a press statement issued yesterday, Chong thanked the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman for his enormous support and assistance towards the lion dance culture of the Chinese community, evident with the annual presentation of lion heads to lion dance bodies in the State.
He also commended the State Government who has never ceased to support Chinese traditional cultures, despite readjustments to the state budget to reduce public expenditure.
Application for the lion heads is now open till February 4 although they must be lion dance troupes of schools or associations registered under the Registrar of Societies (ROS).
Chong said applicants are also required to submit their police permits for lion dance, or documents to show their application for police permit.
Application can be submitted to the Ministry of Special Tasks office or fax to 088-328336. -By Bosco Wong/Sayangsabah
