KOTA KINABALU: A cycling campaign to promote environmental awareness was carried out by the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) today.
The programme was launched yesterday by UMS vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah at the university’s main gate where they cycled and ended at the Faculty of Science.
Among those joining Dr Harun in the ride were deputy vice chancellor (students’ affairs, student’s representatives’ council and few senior staff.
“UMS is the first public university to apply ‘EcoCampus’ values and we hope that this campaign will encourage students to take up cycling and reduce the usage of vehicles,” said Dr Harun.
He hoped the switch from driving vehicles to cycling among the students could be achieved in five years times through the campaign.
He said the university will look into providing suitable facilities inside the campus for cyclers in order to make sure the programme continues to be championed among the students.
“I have observed most students in overseas such as Taiwan and Japan prefer cycling prior tothe early stages of campaigns at their universities,” Dr Harun noted.- Sayangsabah.
