KOTA KINABALU: Cooperation and understanding are vital among youths in ASEAN and Japan to ensure the ‘mutual’ positive elements in the social and cultural systems of the region can be further strengthened.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the features were needed by the ASEAN youths in order for them to recognise each other and form the basis for future relations and cooperation.
“As expressed by our Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) at the recently concluded ASEAN and other related summits in Kuala Lumpur, we need to continue the friendship and collaboration with ASEAN and the dialogue partners as the future will turn its focus to our shores as the most vibrant region
economically, socially and politically,” he said.
He said this at the welcoming ceremony for the Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Programme (SSEAYP) participants under the ship programme here. His speech text was read out by Youth and Sports Ministry Permanent Secretary, Datuk Suzannah Liaw.
Khairy said youths have an important role in determining the future of this region and as future leaders they should remained committed to ensure ongoing development in their respective countries.
“Our Future is entirely dependant on our youth who are the torch bearers of our ideals, our culture, our traditions and our grand vision for the future,” he said.
The SSEAYP, which was jointly organised by the Japanese government and the ASEAN member countries, is being participated by 319 selected youths who arrived at the Kota Kinabalu port today. -BERNAMA
