GEORGE TOWN: Penang Opposition leader Datuk Jahara Hamid has questioned the motive of a State Executive Council member for repeating his
reply on the burning ritual during the Hungry Ghost festival.
“The reply from Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh was well received by Barisan Nasional (BN) state assemblymen. Phee deliberately wanted to turn the question into a racist issue,” she told reporters at the State Assembly here, today.
Datuk Mahmud Zakaria (BN-Sungai Acheh) questioned the rationale for the burning ritual as the nation was grappling with the bad haze situation.
The burning ritual is a religious ceremony and not regarded as open burning under the Environmental Quality (Declared Activities) (Open Burning) Order 2003.-BERNAMA
