KUANTAN: The determination shown by six-year-old Qhaira Aulia Mohd Feisal to collect empty plastic bottles for a week as part of a recycling contest, paid off, when she walked away as the winner with a new bicycle.
Qhaira Aulia, brought six black garbage bags containing empty plastic bottles to the table of the jury at the competition, which was held in conjunction with the Pahang state-level National Mega Gotong-Royong programme, at Padang Isap 1, here, today.
“I felt excited to collect (empty bottles) after I found out the prize was a bicycle. Last year, I also received a bicycle for a recycling competition, but the bicycle was for adults. This time, I can paddle the bicycle home myself,” she told Bernama when met after the event.
The eldest of three siblings said the task of collecting empty bottles was made easier, by the fact that her mother Maruazwati Mohd, 33, sold drinking water and burgers on a small scale near their home, here.
“I will see if there is a nearly empty bottle in my mother’s shop, and ask her for it. If my mother gives it to me, I will put it into the black plastic bag, or if not, my siblings will help me with it” she said.
Qhaira Aulia said she also requested help from the adults in her family, including her aunt and grandmother, to take her out to find empty bottles, because her mother did not allow her to wander afar alone, or with her peers.- BERNAMA
