KUALA LUMPUR: The people need to raise their level of awareness to question and filter information so that they are not easily duped by the emergence of information before its authenticity has been verified.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said it was important to filter information before disseminating it to third parties.

“Today, it has become a tendency among the people to share every information received via social media such as facebook and Whatsapp, without first studying its authenticity,” he said in the latest posting in his blog sskeruak.blogspot.com today.

He said it was easy to forward information to another party using mobile phone applications.

“Imagine if there were 50 people in one group, the information would then spread to 50 people in a split second when it has not been verified,” he said.

According to Salleh, there were numerous cases of unauthenticated information becoming viral and this had to stop as it could spark provocations
and panic in the community.

“Do not rely only on one source. There are many methods and ways to filter. Among them, one could refer to the source or other platform as alternatives.  For example, the official government news agency, mainstream media or if the case was related to accident or crime, refer to the security agencies such as the police,” he said.

Salleh also reminded that it was important for each information to be reviewed and filtered before believing in it or jumping to any conclusions. – BERNAMA
