KOTA KINABALU: Goods and Services Tax ( GST) can only be imposed by members of the business community registered with the Malaysian Royal Custom Department .
Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin said there is a need for consumers to know this fact and to understand GST so that they will not be victimised and exploited by unscrupulous entrepreneurs.
“This can be a burden to the medium and lower income group,” he said when officiating the Consumerism Awareness Programme on GST, organised by the Putatan Woman, Family and Community Development here today.
Yahya who is also the Deputy Chief Minister stressed that all initiatives by the government towards instilling awareness on GST will not be successful if consumers are lackadaisical and do not add on to their knowledge about this matter.
In this respect, he urged the organisers of the programme to continue their good work in ensuring that the community at large have better knowledge of GST upon its implementation soon.
“I hope that the programme participants have benefited from this event and that you will share your knowledge with others. This will ensure that you are more ready as consumers for the implementation of GST,” he said.
The event was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-Operatives and Consumerism and Malaysian Royal Custom Department.- Sayangsabah
