KOTA KINABALU – State Sports Council (MSS) athletes must be mentally strong in both sport and their studies.
State Education Department Human Resources Development Sector Head, Datu Jamigul Datu Salin, said this when officiating the tournament closing ceremony of badminton, aquatic and ten pin bowling, today.
He pointed out athletes who are mentally strong can accomplish their target and a dedicated athlete can do well in class too.
“It’s about mentality. As a sepak-takraw player in high school I play well but I also managed to get into the science stream. It’s not how good you are, it’s how strong you are mentally.”
“There are many good students who are not good in sports. There are also accomplished athletes with good marks which may be impossible for some student.”
Sport also contributes to mental toughness and training every day would help athlete to focus and be disciplined on their schedule.
“You have to be mentally strong if you want to achieve gold in sport. You can always beat the talented athlete as long as you don’t give up easily. They can be physically exhausted due to long practice hours and they will give up if they don’t have strong mentality. If you are mentally strong you can beat them.”
He also stated that by engaging in sport activities could help people to battle depression and gain a more positive outlook on life and yourself. – By Saila Saidie/Sayangsabah
