KOTA KINABALU: Our State special athletes were given a rousing welcome home on Wednesday for their successful outing in the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles, USA.
Sabah were represented by four athletes during the Games on July 25-August 2 where two of them-Chia Yuan Sheng, 27, and Aini Shariqah Madlan, 15, bagged gold and silver apiece for the country.
Overall, the Malaysia contingent comprising 42 athletes and coaches collected six gold in aquatics, athletics, bowling and golf; eight silver in athletics, bowling and unified five-a-side football and seven bronze in athletics and bowling.
The other two representatives-Faridah Isa, 24, and Ong Chee Gian, 19, failed to make a podium finish. Besides that, Chia from Tawau also clinched a fourth place finish in the 4x100m and eighth placing in the men’s shot-put 4kg, while Aini from Lahad Datu finished fourth in the 200m run.
Faridah from Kudat received ribbons for securing sixth and fourth placing respectively in the 100m run and women’s shot-put 3kg. And, Ong from Kota Kinabalu who was slotted to compete in the half marathon and 1,500m did not see action as he was certified by doctors during the Games to be unfit to race in long distance events.-Sayangsabah
