KOTA KINABALU: A man was mistakenly arrested yesterday for wearing a protective mask and sunglasses, while taking pictures around Centre Point and Warisan Square, here.

A business owner saw the suspect acting suspiciously outside his shop at Centre Point around 11.25am yesterday, and made a police report at Karamunsing Police Station at 4.25pm, believing that the suspect may have some ulterior motives.

Based on the information, at 10.30pm on the same day, the suspect had been arrested by the police and brought to the police station for further investigation,” said the District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner M. Chandra, here today.

However, he said, the investigation on the 28 years old suspect found that he is asthmatic, which requires him to wear a mask as advised by his doctor.

Suspect has suffered asthma since 2012 and the doctor advised him to wear a protective mask to filter dusts, and the sunglasses wore by the suspect was to shade him from the hot weather,” he explained, adding that the jacket used by the suspect was due to his job as a van driver for frozen foods products.

In the incident, the suspect was driving his van to send one of his friend to pay his Maxis bills at Warisan Square. He had to drive around Centre Point at the time since there was no available parking lot.

Suspect took the pictures using his mobile phone for fun, to be uploaded in his Facebook account and there was no ulterior motives,” M. Chandra said.

The suspect had been released after the police authority is satisfied with his statement. The local man also have no crime records and urine test shows that he is on drugs.
