KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) has carried out various initiatives to tackle illegal electricity connection by squatters settlements, including to spread information on the danger of making illegal wiring in the social media. However, the result is not enough to abate the problem.
“The existing law is limited and other enforcement issues restrict viable options for SESB to take.
“From SESB statistic, about 111 squatters settlements consisting of more than 10,000 houses have been identified to set up unauthorized connection to get free electricity. These settlements are mainly in Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Semporna, and Tawau,” according to SESB statement.
Illegal wiring by irresponsible people is unsafe and increases the risk for deadly electric shock for other consumers.
The death of one of JBPM personnel in Sandakan by electric shock is not the first case that has been recorded where in 2011, a similar incident happened involving a police officer in Tawau, it said.
This tragedy needs to be a lesson on the danger of illegal electricity connection that is still rampant.
SESB hopes for immediate action to be taken regarding on the issue of squatters settlements. – SayangSabah
