KOTA KINABALU – 22 passengers of a boat on its way from Mantanani Island to Kuala again experienced anxious after the boat carrying the victims was believed to have leaked and flooded with water.
The incident was reported happened at about 4.10pm and SAR operation for search and rescue activated at 7.00pm.
According to Sabah and Labuan Region Maritim Director, First Admiral Mohd Zubil Mat Som, the maritime have been trying to contact the victim since receiving the information on the incident at 4.10pm yet failed to get any response until 9.50pm.
“At 9.50pm the boat skipper have contacted the rescue team using a China registered telephone line.”
“The skipper also was asking for help from the resort and local fishermen, however, they faced difficulties for at the time the condition of the sea with the thunderstorm and sea turbulence,” he said in the press conference here, today.
According to Zubil, when the boat skipper contacted the rescue team at about 9.50, the boat that carrying them have been entirely flooded with water and all the victims have been hanging on the boat to save themselves.
“Throughout the period the security has guided on what is needed to be done until the rescue team arrives however about 11.00pm the communication line with the victim was disconnected and the possibility caused by the running out of phone battery,” he said.
The SAR operation also participated by the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM), the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Royal Malaysian Airforce (TUDM) and the resort carried on until about 6.00am the rescue team has found the boat was believed carried the victims, however, all the victims was not found at the location of the boat.
At about 8.00am the PDRM Airforce team saw the victims floating around Tanjung Dudar.
At 8.30am all the victims involving four tour guides, 12 tourists from China, four boat crews, and two local reportedly saves.
Zubil added his side will conduct a discussion with the resort operators in the future to discuss the safety measurement on the boat that is used carrying the tourist to prevent the same event from being repeated.- SayangSabah
