KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal issued a stern warning to the newly-appointed Community Development Leaders (PPM) to stay away from corrupt practice and instead work hard for the people.

He reminded the PPM that under the new regime, the people expected a New Sabah and the benchmark of a New Sabah is not how much wealth the PPM have gathered for themselves but how far did they go to help people changed their life for the better.

“Don’t be corrupted. I know there will be many temptations out there but you must remember that you are not given this responsibility to benefit yourself. You are supposed to take care the community in your area,” he said addressing the 58 new PPM at the State Administrative Centre near here today.

He also reminded the PPM that the community in this context comprises of all irrespective of religions, race and political affiliations.

Shafie cautioned that the Warisan-led State government will not tolerate any hanky-panky by the PPM and even the elected representatives.

“Don’t tell me after one year of becoming a PPM, you can afford a Ninja Turtle or moved to a new house,” he said.

“Don’t mingle with the towkays but do mingle every minute with the people on the ground because there are many who are still living in hardship out there. These are the people that you should be looking after not the towkays,” he said.

Shafie said that being in politics for more than three decades he had met with people who no matter how much money they have in their pocket, it would never be enough.

“We will be monitoring closely as a counter-check measure to ensure no negative issues in the future and I expect a monthly report from the PPM Unit (UPPM),” he said, adding that the Barisan Nasional (BN) experience should serve as a lesson.

“During the election, BN dished out so much money but in the end what happened? Money is no longer everything for the people,” he said.

At the same time, Shafie said under the new government, no party will be allowed to become too dominant like in the previous government when Umno became too big that other BN component parties were simply dwarfed.

Towards this end, he called upon the new PPM to ensure they work closely with other parties in their respective constituencies.

“Don’t be exclusive and only take care of your own party. If you are from Warisan, work with Upko, DAP and PKR. We must get used to working together from the beginning so that it will be easier when election comes,” he said.

He reminded them it was not easy for them to unseat a very strong government like BN in the previous election but it was the people who wanted to change, therefore the PPM now have the opportunity to fulfil the changes desired by the people.

At the same time, Shafie said it was also not an easy decision since there were so many lining up for the position.

“Therefore, we must work hard not for Warisan, DAP, PKR and Upko but for the people of Sabah,” he said.

Later, Shafie witnessed the PPM taking their oath and then signed their appointment letter.-SabahNewsToday
